We had our special presentation about how plants and animals get ready for winter! Wow, we heard a lot of interesting information! Trees take a much longer time to mature to adulthood than people do and they live a LONNNNGGG time!
We are thinking and sharing about Remembrance Day (we have our school assembly on Friday). We are thinking about what peace means to us.
Most of us should be bringing some new little books home today in our folders! We always practice reading that book at school.
Always, if in doubt, read the book to your child, line by line and let them repeat after you! This is an excellent way to practice voice inflection and voice fluency.
I talk with students about fluency being "flow and smooth", or "like an actor on a stage, telling a story to make it interesting" . That way children do not mistake fluency for "SPEED" and think they just have to read faster!
Fluency is the flow that comes as the brain, memory, voice and eyes all connect faster with practice; it builds as sight word knowledge and "automaticity" of word recognition starts to happen in the brain.
We can't rush is process; young children need to spend a lot of time in "just right" or what we think of as "really easy", or "repetitive" texts, so that they see common sight words over and over and over again, until they become automatic - that way when reading happens, comprehension is not sacrificed for word decoding skills. Those easy to read beginner books are such an important stage of development that we should not rush kids through!
Thank you for sharing your child's reading at home! Thank you for sharing all kinds of other literacy experiences with your child every day, by playing games, sharing great books, listening and talking, talking, talking about all kinds of stuff, and experiencing life together!
