Awesome Assembly Today

Students were great participants and audience members today.  We saw the handbell choir, grade four students performed "In Flanders Field", there were poems and readings and a story about a puppy that went off to war.

Students shared their own "Peace is" writing back in the classroom; our ideas, pictures and poppies will be up for conferences in November, as will our felting projects!

We have a busy short week next week!  Looking forward to our trip to Telus Spark to "spark" us further along with our science unit on "Building Things" . This trip also helps make great social studies community connections for us!  Students will continue with colour experiments in the room, as investigations across and connecting art, science, and social studies continue throughout the year.

In case you're wondering; students are learning about connections we find during our learning.  Our major science units throughout grade 1 include: 1. Colour, 2. Senses, 3. Seasonal Changes, 4. Needs of Plants and Animals and 5. Building Things.  Many specific outcomes are embedded in this learning and as you can tell from the titles, these units overlap, weave in and out and build all through the year.  A great connection to our felting experience!

We learned that felting requires, wool from a sheep, that there are stages of wool, it looks different than we imagine it will initially, and to create a felted project of any kind requires: wool, water, heat and agitation - we will revisit those ideas and see how they connect to other learning experiences throughout the year!

Next week we'll have opportunities to interview some school staff members, to assist with our understandings about how members contribute to communities and how communities come together.  We will be doing some writing and reflecting connected to our "me trees" we created on felting day, as we dig into our own community connections and where we each fit in.

A new form came home today (yellow).  This is a permission form for in-line skating, a new gym unit, starting up in November as well!

Have a great weekend everyone!  Rest up for the week ahead!  Watch for some writing updates and connections to be posted soon; ideas you can use at home to support your child as a developing visual artist and writer!
