I might be bringing home a school math challenge for my age range as part of Hawkwood school. This is a student choice and not classroom homework.
I might also be mentioning a "problem" we started in the classroom. We introduced a "stop and think first" problem, and we are learning about thinking instead of blurting guesses! We are thinking through a problem that does need addition and it's about a task we will do with our buddies this Friday!
We will be thinking about problem solving from many perspectives, as math outcomes are often embedded in a problem solving format.
The problem solving incorporates literacy and comprehension, introduces new vocabulary and requires a problem solving mentality or perspective.
Math facts, skills and processes, such as addition or subtraction, spacial awareness, sorting, organizing and patterns skills, as well as some building will be used at one time or another to solve problems, but first we need to figure out what the problem is, what we need to answer and what information is available and what information is missing!
We will be practicing a lot of problem solving! This is a different expectation and set of skills than just doing facts and skills to add, subtract, build or organize in a way of our own choosing.
