Library this week

Hi everyone!

Please keep sending those library books.  We will exchange them eventually.  The book fair set up and clean up takes a long while, so we haven't been able to get in and exchange books yet, but will do so before the end of the week!

Ask me about counting by 2's, 5's and 10's, as we practice every day!  Maybe I can count by 10's starting on a different number like 2, or 7.

Please keep reading those little books at home!  We really see the progress as we practice and do word work at school and it begins to translate into our written work as well!

Using some playing cards and/or  dice, ask me if I can show 10 different ways to get to 10!

In some of our games we are just learning how to say a math sentence out loud, for example,
"2 + 5 = 7" two plus five equals seven; we are just learning to associate the = with equals, the + with plus and the - with minus.

In connection, when we do math riddles, we are learning to say, "I am thinking of a number, it is (1 or 2 more or less ) than _____ . What is my number" .  For example "I am thinking of a number, it is 2 more than 17, what is my number?"

Making tens facts, 1 more or 2 more, 1 less and 2 less, are really important mental math strategies for moving on to higher math.    Initially, they become "Math Facts", but eventually they become strategies for doing larger numbers, rounding off, estimating and doing larger number addition and subtraction, as well as division and multiplication in later grades.

In grade one we want to master making tens facts and 1more, 1less, 2more, 2less up to 20.

Of course many of our games also support all the simple addition up to 20, which will become math facts later on as well!  Another helpful strategy is "Double Up" or "Making Doubles" sometimes we call them egg carton numbers.

Ask me my doubles up to 12. We have been practicing egg carton numbers with partners and some of us have also worked up to 24 using 2 egg cartons!
