A great big WELCOME to everyone! I look forward to working with everyone this year.
We are all getting settled in, taking time to get to know one another, and getting used to full day routines.
If your child is a little tired (exhausted!) and somewhat reluctant to share about "What happened at school today?" That means they are normal! Everyone is making the adjustment, including me!
To help you out:
Day 1 - We have Music
Day 2 - We have Gym
Day 3 - We have Gym
Day 4 - We have Music (that was Monday Sept 9th this week)
Day 5 - We have Gym
Day 6 - We have Gym
That way you can ask, "what did you learn in music today?" "What story did you read today?"and so on...
Every Friday is a Day 0 and we often have assemblies and our own breaks as a class that day
Please review some basics with your child when you can:
- My full name ie Judy Palsich
- My phone number (stick with one most important to know)
- My address
- My birthday (we're trying out our birthday month song this month)
These are some of the ideas we are sharing and thinking about in number talks as well as songs and rhymes, and are some of the "developing independence" milestones appropriate to your child's age.
These are frequently great grade 1 links to "numbers in my life", exploring all the ways we use numbers every day
Some Significant Numbers we talk about daily:
- Right now we have 20 students in our room and every day we do a little math to figure out how many we have if someone is away. We take away, we add on and experience some real world adding and subtracting, while developing a working mathematics vocabulary.
- Each day we post which day we are on for the school 6 day cycle (Fridays being 0)
- Each day we post and look at place value for the number of days we've been in school
- Each day (or almost each day) we add a number to our personal calendar book and compare amounts on the weather chart
As well, we are looking at how many letters in our first names and making a comparison graph to see "how many", "how many more", "how many less" and "equal amounts", while managing this information in a new format.
Lots of Oral Language, Listening, Shared Stories, Songs, Rhymes and Chants!
Ask your child if they can recite the SEPTEMBER poem with the crocodile yet!
We are also kicking off our Grade 1 year with "COLOUR" as our first Science unit, so we will be sharing lots of books about colour and doing some colour experiments and Art links in our learning this month.
We've been exploring lots of other games and activities and how we work together in our room:
A lot of little ones think that math is just all about numbers, but we've been practicing lots of sorting and creating patterns already, as well as other STEM bin activities for building and creating. Through the year we will have lots of Literacy based learning, but also infused into the S - Science, T - Technology, E- Engineering, and M - Mathematics. Often our learning overlaps subject areas and the students are getting used to using a lot of different materials in the room.
