New Classmate in our room!

We are welcoming Arianna to our classroom on Tuesday morning!  


Today, we finished our "self-portrait" torn paper art, connected to our similarities and differences, inclusion and community, as well as our sensory organs for our 5 major senses. 

We will add our self portraits to our visual journal covers.

We looked at our new word list today! We will practice more with these words tomorrow!

We wrote all about our weekend and read our writing with our reading partner today!

With both Art and gym time it was a very busy day! 

In Math we played a new game - at school we use our place value mats and work up to 99.  We use a dry erase surface and dry erase markers to play, make and write a number with a partner.  One person building and directing the other printing.


At Home this could be played with an adult guiding the writing in a long growing list on a piece of paper.  You could also, quickly represent a 10 rod with a popsicle stick and represent a cube with any small lego style cube you might have to represent 1. 

- One person makes the first number using rods and ones (you could just draw sticks and cubes to represent on a piece of paper if you do not have materials)

- Start with a low number, maybe even just 2! The builder/director builds or represents the number and the person printing prints the numerical representation, correcting for direction or misplaced place value!

- Then the person building/representing the numbers has to choose to say, "add 1", "add 2", "add 10" as they add the appropriate cube(s) or rod to the chart, and the person writing the number needs to write, and correct the appropriate place value position as the number keeps changing - always by 1, 2, or 10 only!  All the way up to 99

Then the same process for subtract 1, 2, or 10 coming all the way back down to 0.

Then trade jobs and do it again! 

"I can probably show you how to do this at home!"

In this way, we practice printing numerals correctly, representing numbers to 99, and adding on, then subtracting, by 1 or 2 or 10.
