An Awesome short Week

Read together with our buddies this morning, had an extra gym free choice time with Mr. J today - that was 3 amazing gym days in a row!  Wow!  We had some time for free "STEAM" activity choices for learning in the classroom today: some students chose building, others technology, still others, math, patterns, writing and card making, painting or other language and math choices.

You might be able to visit some 100 thinking activities to review at home, as we talked about getting from today's 75 days of school so far! - to 100 day (we considered 25cents, 2 and 3 quarters and how to get to one dollar or 100) - Together we figured out that we have 25 more days to get to the 100th day of school!

We've been considering mental math around the idea that if 2+2=4 then 20+20 = 40 because we understand that 20 means 2 tens and if we add 2 tens and 2 tens we get 4 tens, and so on... We are all on individual pathways with our understandings of place value and what that means for bigger numbers, but that for mental math, there are really fun ways to take big numbers and use small numbers to figure things out!  Sometime working with bigger numbers feels more fun for children, while at the same time, we are really learning about math facts up to 20!

Thinking about Pizza Party next week on Friday... anything that keeps the positive steam engine rolling through a very cold week ahead, when we will likely spend more time indoors than usual...

We have been keeping our citizenship jar full of good choice jewels!  Therefore, connecting to community learning, gathering information and data management, students will monitor our progress next week, they will gather the necessary information, create a notice home for parents and we may be having a pizza party with pajamas on Friday if all goes well for the week!

It is also a mental health school focus next Friday, so that should tie in nicely with our Rights, Rules, Responsibilities and Benefits and how they connect and reflect to and with good citizenship and taking care of ourselves, each other and our school to keep everyone healthy.

We will tie some math, language, science, health, and social studies together as we consider pizza - a healthy choice or a sometimes choice - open for debate!  We will look at how to make pizza, needs and ingredients, planning, expectations, and execution (but ultimately I will order the pizzas in) ... we'll see how the "creating process" goes.  We will also collect data and survey, which requires math, language and communication skills.

Students will still be encouraged to bring water and healthy snacks that day, as pizza is an option of course and all dietary and food needs will be surveyed and accounted for!
