Happy October!
Today we did a lot of "just right book" and "challenge" or "instructional" book checkins!
We all chose a variety of little books that will be a part of Home Reading coming home after the Thanksgiving Long Weekend.
I always ask students to take a book home that has been practiced at a "just right" reading level, so the books that come home should sound quite fluent and "easy" to read for your child.
At school we practice reading to ourselves, to others, to a buddy and to the teacher. When little ones are learning to read we want to make sure we never leave them struggling through a book and we want to distinguish "word work" and "writing" skills, such as sounding out, from reading skills, which are about enjoyment, message, comprehension and voice fluency and inflection.
Emergent to beginner readers like to "memorize" predictable text and read it with their eyes closed!
Memorization in the beginning is accepted and encouraged, especially because it supports voice fluency that will grow and develop as we practice and gradually move into more text awareness with instructional level books for learning times at school.
Home Reading is meant to support the great achievements with reading, to share that book at home and feel very successful and proud! Every learners' reading journey looks and sounds unique, and we support all of them where they are starting from, to make the next reasonable and logical step in their personal reading journey.
I encourage you to continue using Raz Kids and Starfall.com to support your learner with FUN activities at home!
We are doing lots of work to get ready for Home Reading!
Happy Reading everyone!
