Google access Email sent to parents

I sent this to emails.  Some content has been edited out from here for privacy, so refer to your email first please

By now you have received your child's Gmail name and password
The simple way they should be able to access Google meet is:
Step 1  Go into their google Gmail account using their name and password that was sent to parent emails separately
for those unfamiliar once you go to google.com there will be a little dotty waffle at the top right, when you click that, you will see a list of choices and that is one way to get to your Gmail, by choosing the mail icon
Step 2  At 10:30 am on Friday April 3rd, open the invite in your mailbox, that should have come from me
Step 3  Students should just be able to click the link right there to take them directly to our chat

If that does not work to get in - please check your email
Step 1 Take a deep breath, meetings can be joined at any time we will be on for half an hour!
Step 2 On your Google page where there is a little dotty waffle at the top right, click on those dots
Step 3 Choose the green camera Google meet icon
Step 4 Click on Join a meeting, or if you see an option to join the meeting already named, just click on it
Step 5 If you get a blank box, when you click join a meeting, then type in our nickname for this meeting, which is has been sent to student gmail accounts - if this is confusing please read this same information in your email, as there is access information I cannot share here.

Once you are in:
Usually the first thing you see is your own face!
Then you click -  join now
Please click at the bottom of your screen as soon as you join, and choose microphone to MUTE yourself
Students can unmute when they are going to talk
I am asking students to mute so that they will be able to hear me talk

Important Guidelines!
1. Try to be in a quiet area
2.  Wear clothing!
3.  Smile!
4.  Be patient!
5.  Wave all you want, but MUTE while others are talking
6.  I understand that if students have headphones that can help with other noise on their end
7. I will say hello, good morning and make sure I greet students as I see them join, but for the most part this is just a chance to say "hi" and see each other briefly

BREATH DEEPLY
I am just learning this too and did a meeting set up for my team today - they all got into the meeting I set and I ended up in a different window meeting... LAUGH OUT LOUD.. I eventually found my way!  And you will too
Please assure your children that we will all TRY our best, but don't worry if it just doesn't work out this time!
Mistakes will happen
We will try again another day just so that students at least get a chance to try and to see me and we hear each other hopefully.
Google meet will not be a regular expectation, but as I suspect there may be glitches, I will see about trying to set another one up for another time... right now this was organized by our school admin to hopefully optomize time and availability for parents working at home, and families with higher priorities right now, as well as for multiple child/grade families and all of us just trying to cope with a new reality.
Moving forward we will mainly ask you to access Google classroom, which I am still in the process of organizing and setting up, as this is about a Team planning approach and we are trying our best to understand how to do all of this efficiently and effectively to best support families!
If you are unfamiliar, all your google platforms are accessed the same way described above - in that waffle, click, choose whatever google app you are looking for - google classroom is in there as well, but not available to students until Monday the 6th!

student Gmail accounts

Hello all,

Happy April Fools Day??? HMMM.... Wow, it's April!

You should have received two emails from me.  If you have not responded to an email from me so far this week, it would be helpful for you to do so, so that you are accurately in my inbox!  I have to send all the emails individually for this so it takes a little longer.

As a note, please when you email me, always include your child's name as quick reference for me at my end - otherwise I have to double check to fail safe from one screen to another to ensure I am sending confidential information to the correct person!

I've been in meetings and exploring how to set up Google platforms.  I have all the kids passwords updated and will be sending most of those emails and passwords out to you tomorrow (Thursday).

Please remember our students do not have access to anything before our Google meet on Friday, which you will receive an invite to on Friday morning about a half hour prior to our 10:30 meeting time for students.  We have been guided as to when we should send out information to ease this process.

This is a student meeting time and teachers are not permitted conversation, discussion or sharing of any information with parents through this platform.

Any other Google Classroom access will not go out until Monday morning start up, so don't panic! Thank you for your patience and understanding.  I feel like a newbie teacher again!

No worries for Friday!  Please remember this is new for all of us and as teachers we have been experimenting with the platforms ourselves to see how to navigate and how it all works.

Hello Grade One Families

Hi Grade One Families,

Please keep an eye out for an email from me later this afternoon outlining some of the next steps for learning adventures. I will also be phoning families over the next couple of days to check in and respond to any questions from the email. You need to know that you are missed at school but we are really excited about what lies ahead for us, and we will be sharing details with you through this coming week.

Hello! Link to Learning!

https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx

This is the link to CBE's on line K-6 learning suggestions - you can access through public web page under Learning at Home  - many great suggestions here

Remember that young minds learn best with problem solving, projects and studying or researching something of interest - investigate and ask questions...

Miss you all and look forward to seeing you whenever that happens!  I am well, and hope you are all staying healthy!

Go ahead and look back at older blogs from me, as I have repeatedly posted ideas for reading, writing, and numeracy.  There are already game and activity suggestions there!

The most important work for grade 1 students is READ, READ, READ - for comprehension, voice inflection and fluency building!  who, what, when, where, why, how, what if..., what does that mean to you?  These are the reasons for reading and the indicators of a child's actual reading ability!

STOP before you finish reading!  do you know what's happening?  can you make a prediction - what will happen next?

Who are the characters? the main character? what's the big idea? what's the big problem? how is the problem solved? what makes this story interesting? is this a fiction or non-fiction? what information did you learn?

GET OUTSIDE EVERYDAY FOR FRESH AIR!

DRAW with details; foreground, background, inside or outside?, who, where, what, when, how???? - details to add to pictures with simple sentence expectations and meeting those writing expectations as posted in previous blogs!  Can you make a web or diagram of the information you learned from this book?

Detailed retell of stories - can you get up to 8 or 10 details into sequence!  Can you retell the big ideas in your own words!  Can you draw about the beginning, middle, end!

GAMES, GAMES, GAMES - the non-computer and non- ipad kind are best for young minds!  BREATHE DEEPLY like a FROG - 10, 10, 10 like in the gym!  PUZZLES!  DRAW and COLOUR a great picture and make it into your own puzzle!

Look on line for 3D shape nets - can you match them to their 2D shapes?  Can you find them in your natural world?  Can you define the characteristics of basic shapes? ie, what makes a square a square, vs a rectangle? why is a square a rectangle? but a rectangle is not a square?  Make and build, Build and Make - STUFF - then record what you did, how did you do it? - Built a great Lego structure?  Can you draw it?  Can you record how many of certain sizes, shapes, colours you used for your construction? Can you graph them?

Up until now, we have been making links between all our grade 1 science units: Senses, Seasonal Changes, Building Things, Creating Colour, Needs of Plants and Animals...

Get out the Playdough, or make some at home!  Have fun with learning and...

GET OUTSIDE EVERYDAY FOR FRESH AIR!  Can't say that enough!

Paper towel tubes

For our continued foray into Building Things in science and connecting to 2D and 3D for math we would like to do some more building with all our materials.

If you have empty paper towel tubes or any kind of LARGER tube at all, please send it along to school and we can always make use of those, so never recycle, always send to us!!

Please DO NOT SEND TOILET PAPER TUBES - these are restricted for health and safety reasons.

We have lots of kleenex tissue boxes, but would love any shoe boxes you might have as well!

Thank you!

Conferences and Book Fair Cancelled

Hello everyone,

We just heard that our regularly scheduled conferences have been cancelled.  We don't have any news about if or when we would re-schedule; that would have to be decided at the admin level for our school organization and time.

That unfortunately means that Book Fair is also cancelled.

Please know that we are reviewing health safety DAILY at school - LOTS of hand washing instruction and extra cleaning up happening...

Stay healthy!
